Jupiter High School started the week off strong, winning the first spirit flag at the opening session, on Tuesday, July 18. Jupiter quickly caught the eyes of the judges with their astronomical enthusiasm, making for a triumphant return to Camp Orlando.
“[We’re] louder than anyone else here. We’re more spirited than anyone else here. The best place to be is where we’re at,” Jupiter student Randy Prisendorf said, “[Spirit] means heart and determination. It means everything and anything.”
What earned Jupiter the flag was their ability to put their energy on display, “I lost my voice yesterday. But you know, I got it back today, [And I’m] getting ready to lose it again,” Jupiter student Ryan Senecal said.
While the students of Jupiter are admittedly loud and proud, winning the flag for the week takes much more than just that, “We’re looking for someone that has great journalistic promise. Someone that is willing to do things that they’re scared of. Someone that is creative, that tries their hardest, and is a good team player especially,” Camp Orlando alum Joey Mazur said.
Volunteers like Mazur are key to deciding who waves the spirit flag, “Be loud. Make your presence known. Do something that no other school is doing. Make sure you have something that shows your identity whether that’s a flag, your colors, something like that.” Camp Orlando alum Ramsey Odom said.
“We were pretty confident, but the ultimate goal is [to win] the biggest spirit flag. [This is] one small step for Jupiter, and one huge leap for mankind,” Senecal said.
Jupiter is determined to win the flag for the week, but students from other schools are ambitiously trying to claim the title for themselves, “We are going to win the spirit flag,” Boone student Ryah Blair said, “We are going to be hype tomorrow morning.”
Jupiter is the frontrunner, but tomorrow morning, the tides could turn. Winning the spirit flag doesn’t necessarily mean being the biggest or the loudest. By utilizing other skills, smaller schools can win the title. As anticipation builds, we look forward to seeing who will sign the flag next.
